Yusuf Hazziez, born Joseph Arrington, Jr (Joe Tex) was born on August 8, 1935 and died on August 13, 1982. He recorded for a number of labels (including King, Ace, and Anna) before signing to Dial (distributed by Atlantic) and enjoying chart success. His Anna recordings were issued on Chess.

His preaching style evolved quite early on in his recording career. While relatively unsuccessful at the time, his Chess sides are still worth hearing. Tex was quite a character and claimed to be the original writer of the hit song “Fever”, claiming he sold the rights to others because he could not otherwise pay the rent. Tex converted to the Muslim faith in 1966 changing his name to Yusuf Hazziez.
