The Bill Smith Combo, pictured in a rare photograph, was a pseudonym used by a group known as Tommy and the Tom Toms, who were from Texas, and the group adopted the name Bill Smith Combo because their record producer was Major Bill Smith. They are understood to have been Eddie Wayne Hill, Leonard Walters, Joel Colbert, Joe Donnell and Tommy Brown. The group are known to have backed Freddy Fender on a number of his recordings issued by Chess on the Argo label.
