Buddy Griffin

Buddy Griffin | Clemson University | tc361

Rhythm and blues musician Ernest “Buddy” Griffin was originally pianist in The Griffin Brothers Band with his older brother Jimmy Griffin. They had some successes in the early 1950s and in 1952 Buddy decided on a solo career and signed with Chess Records. Both Brothers continued to record with R&B artistes of the day. The line up on Chess 1586, which was a minor hit, is understood to be “Silly Willie” Wilson, Chuck Reeves, Earl Swanson, Lawrence Burgan, Courtney Brooks and Claudia Swann, who married Buddy. They later recorded as Buddy and Claudia Griffin and were backed on some recordings by the Moonglows. Griffin should not be confused with the famous jazz banjoist of the same name.
