Jazz and ballad singer and civil rights campaigner Albert George “Al” Hibbler was born on August 16, 1915 and died on April 24, 2001. Mr Hibbler was born blind. He is best remembered as a featured vocalist for many years with the Duke Ellington Orchestra but left Ellington in 1951 after a money dispute. He became active in civil rights politics in the late 1950s and was invited to sing at Louis Armstrong’s funeral.
