Jazz musician Eli “Lucky” Thompson was born on June 16, 1924 and died on July 30, 2005. He is associated with Lionel Hampton, Don Redman, Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Count Basie, among many playing rhythm and blues, bebop and hard bop. He was unimpressed with the American recording industry and lived in Paris for a number of years in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1960s he became a music tutor at Dartmouth College, then he left the music business completely. For a time in the 1990s, he was reported to be living as a hermit.
