Gospel group The Soul Stirrers is one of the longest established gospel groups, having been originally formed in 1926. Among the many famous names who have been members of The Soul Stirrers during the group’s history are Lou Rawls, Johnnie (“Soul Preacher”) Taylor and Sam Cooke. The group experimented with styles to keep their music up to date and were among the first to develop doo-wop and other styles of music. They recorded for Checker in the late 1960s and an album “Tribute to Sam Cooke” was issued in 1970.
