Blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon was born on August 8, 1920 and died on September 18, 1997, sadly of throat cancer. After service in the Second World War, during which he regularly broadcast on American Forces Radio, he achieved success early on as a “blues shouter” singer. He widely toured the UK and Europe from the 1960s including performing at jazz festivals. He was also an accomplished actor.
