Blues singer Arthur “Big Boy” Spires was born on February 25, 1912 and died on October 22, 1990. He took up the guitar in the 1930s and secured a place in Lightning Hopkins’ band. In the 1940s he moved to Chicago and by 1952 was recording for Chess. His first single on Checker, Murmur Low, is regarded today as a classic but did not sell well when originally released. He continued to play into the 1970s but was forced to give up the guitar due to arthritis.
