Jazz organist “Brother” (sometimes “Captain”) Jack McDuff was born on September 17, 1926 and died on January 23, 2001, of heart failure. His most successful period was the 1960s when he recorded for Prestige, Atlantic, and Cadet. Like many jazz musicians, he had a lean time in the 1970s and 1980s, but he continued performing almost until his death. He is associated with George Benson, Roland Kirk and Gene Ammons, among others.
