Sax Mallard

Oett M. “Sax” Mallard was born on September 2, 1915 and as his nickname indicates was a saxophonist known for his R&B and urban music. Playing on radio in his teens, he had numerous jobs with local orchestras and bands before serving in the US Forces. While in the US Navy he completed his music degree. By 1947 he was a session musician and played on a number of Aristocrat sessions including recordings by Jump Jackson (as a combo member), Big Bill Broonzy, Eddie Boyd, Arbee Stidham, Roosevelt Sykes, Washboard Sam, and Tampa Red. Mallard died on August 29, 1986.
