Dorothy Jeanne Thompson (Dorothy Ashby) was born on August 6, 1930 and died on April 13, 1986 of cancer. She was a jazz harpist and composer who played rhythm and blues as well as jazz. She was born in Detroit; her father was guitarist Wiley Thompson. Her trio included her husband John Ashby on drums. As well as touring and recording in her own right, she was a highly sought after session musician, and among the many albums she plays on, is Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the key of life”.
