The jazz drummer Bernard “Buddy” Rich was born on September 30, 1917 and died on April 2, 1987 of heart failure following surgery for a malignant brain tumour. He seems to have been interested in percussion from an early age – one! By 1938 he was with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra backing Frank Sinatra and other stars. His recording Lulu’s Back In Town/Making Whoopee was released on Argo 5384.
