Jazz organist Sam Lazar was born in 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri. After playing with a number of orchestras, often on piano, Lazar served in the Army from 1951-1953. Upon discharge, he began studying medical technology but returned to music in 1958 inspired by organist Jimmy Smith. His first album for Argo, Space Flight, was recorded in 1960 with bassist Willie Dixon, drummer Chauncey Williams and guitarist Grant Green.
