Johnnie and Joe are Johnnie Louise Richardson, who was born on June 29, 1935 and died on October 25, 1988 from complications arising from a stroke, and Joe Rivers, who was born in 1937. They began singing together in 1957 and recorded for J & S Records, who leased them to Chess.

Three of the songs were hits including their best known song, “Over the Mountain, Across the Sea”, which was a hit twice, in 1957 and again in 1960. It was released in the UK on London Records in 1958.

They continued singing together until Richardson died.
