Rev C L Franklin | Find a grave | tc167

Clarence LaVaughn Franklin was born in Mississippi on January 22, 1915 and died on July 27, 1984, having lived a full life as an American Baptist preacher, a civil rights activist, and of course father of Aretha. He became a preacher aged 16 and soon found his own ministry in Memphis. He became known as “the man with the Million Dollar Voice” when he pioneered recording his sermons on records (which continued into the 1970s) and using radio to broadcast sermons on Sundays.

A number of his recordings were issued by the Chess group, as part of its extensive repertoire of gospel music.
