The highly distinctive Rufus Thomas, Jr. was born on March 27, 1917 and died on December 15, 2001 of heart failure some time after open heart surgery. He was a radio broadcaster, singer, and comedian. He was also an animal and bird impersonator, a talent he had acquired at the age of 6! Some of his 1950s recordings, before his more famous recordings with the Stax company of Memphis, were made by the Sun Records company before they had their own label, and the masters were leased to Chess.
