J. B. Lenoir was born on March 5, 1929 and died on April 29, 1967 of a heart attack after a car crash. In the 1940s Lenoir played with Sonny Boy Williamson II and Elmore James in New Orleans. From 1951 he moved to Chicago and recorded with a number of labels including Chess and Checker. He was known for his sharp fashions and distinctive vocals.
