Frederick Russell Jones (Ahmad Jamal) was born on July 2, 1930. He recorded for Chess’ Argo (later Cadet) label from 1959 to 1968. A full time musician from 1948, Ahmad Jamal has been praised as one of the greatest jazz innovators over his exceptionally long career. He has been awarded many honours, and in 1994, Jamal received the National Endowment for the Arts American Jazz Masters award and was also named a Duke Ellington Fellow at Yale University.
